The element of surprise…

Art speaks truth to us on many different levels. For me, as an artist, it is the process that reveals my truths. I am most intrigued by the emotional element of surprise I witness as a piece begins to form. In every finished piece I will have experienced fear, excitement, hope, conflict, disappointment, redemption and resolution in multiple cycles. It’s amazing how this creative process affects me beyond the studio, as I can often carry these feelings around with me for days until a work is completed.

I work in a manner that allows accidents to occur and with this comes the challenge - How can I get myself out of this mess? How can I get the piece to the stage of redemption and resolution?

This constant struggle between control and freedom allows for many unplanned occurrences that can be strangely rewarding once the final mark has been made. To have something develop from nothing with no plan, and still work out, is the best feeling there is, and it is also why I am an artist.

My greatest goal as an artist is to create a visual vocabulary where my emotions are represented by line, value and shape; and to continue to create deeply personal and thoughtful images that reflect common themes I find throughout humanity.
